The Major League Baseball team in Cleveland is changing its name to Guardians, the franchise announced Friday, dropping the controversial āIndians,ā by which it had been known for more than a century.

Guardian may be defined in ways that might be apt for the name of a professional sports franchise (āone that guardsā), in ways that are inapt for such a name (āone who has the care of the person or property of anotherā), and in ways that might be puzzling in such a setting (āa superior of a Franciscan monasteryā). We presume that āone that guardsā is the intended meaning in this case.
