Last week, on a blustery day in the middle of a cold snap, my cat Tatiana liberated herself from our home and went on a madcap adventure through town. It was a humdinger of a journey, which I can recap thanks to a mishmash of texts from my avuncular neighbor, who was able to spot Tatiana from his fourth-floor window despite the whiteout conditions.
After taking a few concentric laps around our house, Tatiana made her way to a rendezvous with her dog friend Scout, who had dug an orderly path through the snow from her front door to the street. From there, Tatiana zigzagged across the town square, past an old jalopy, to peruse the gizmos on display at the hardware store. Tatiana finds that store captivating, even though she has no use for the doodads, doohickeys, and thingamajigs they sell there. I think the owner gives her treats that she quickly devours.
Tatiana certainly does things with panache. I wouldn’t be surprised if she moves to the beat of a fun and peppy earworm. The small cat skipped around a motley crew of neighbors who were shoveling snow in the town square. I worried that Tatiana might get lost in all the hoopla. But it was serendipity that just as she was getting tired, our neighbor passed by on his snowplow and gave her a lift home.
As an escape artist, Tatiana certainly hasn’t lost her mojo. And when she’s in cahoots with Scout, there’s no stopping her. I just hope the next time she decides to visit her swanky friend, she chooses a balmy summer day or even a scorcher. If that cat escapes during another weather emergency, like a cyclone, she can find her own way home!
