transient global amnesia

: temporary amnesia of short duration (as several hours) that is marked by sudden onset, by loss of past memories, and by an inability to form new memories, and that is believed to result from a transient ischemic attack affecting the posteromedial thalamus or hippocampus on both sides of the brain
