city in northeastern Estonia on the Narva River, which flows 8 miles (13 kilometers) from Lake Peipus to the Gulf of Finland population 64,000

Note: Narva was founded in 1223 when the area was under Danish rule. The city was taken by Russia in 1558 and by Sweden in 1581. The Swedes successfully defended it against an attack by the forces of Peter the Great in 1700 but succumbed to his subsequent siege of 1704, which brought Narva back under Russian control.
