Note: Named and described by American mineralogist Samuel Lewis Penfield (1856-1906) and chemist Harry Ward Foote (1875-1942) in "On Bixbyite, a new Mineral, and on the Associated Topaz," American Journal of Science, vol. 154 (1897), pp. 105-08: "The mineral to be described in the present article was sent to us for identification by Mr. Maynard Bixby of Salt Lake City, Utah … We take pleasure in naming this mineral after Mr. Bixby, who has generously supplied us with material for investigation … (p. 105, 107).
