Foreign Claims Settlement Commission of the United States

Agency

independent agency within the Department of Justice charged with adjudicating claims of U.S. nationals against foreign governments. Working either under specific jurisdiction conferred by Congress or pursuant to international claims settlement agreements, the commission processes claims by U.S. servicemen and civilians, such as those held as foreign prisoners of war, or by the survivors of such servicemen and civilians. The commission also furnishes technical assistance and advice to other federal agencies in planning new foreign claims adjudication programs and negotiating international claims settlement agreements.
