Etymology

borrowed from New Latin, from Greek bdélla "leech" + New Latin -o- -o- + -nyssus (as in Dermanyssus dermanyssus )

Note: Genus name introduced by the Brazilian acarologist Flávio da Fonseca (1900-63) in "Notas de acareologia XXXIV. Posição do gênero Liponissus Kolenati em face das espécies tropicais; seu desdobramento em novos gêneros (Acari, Liponissidae)," Ciencia: Revista hispano-americana de Ciencias puras y aplicadas (México, D.F.), vol. 2, nos. 6-7 (25 de julio de 1941), pp. 262-65.
